Giuseppe Fanin

(San Giovanni in Persiceto (BO) 1924 -1948)fanin

In 1944 the pact between the major anti-fascist political forces led to the birth of the CGIL as one united confederation that resumed the path of the Socialist CGL and the Catholic CIL broken by fascism. After the deafeat of Fascism and when Italian Republic was formed, the contrasts between the political cultures of the unitary CGIL rised in a short time, as much as the increasing of the Cold War. The split was fulfilled in July 1948 when there was the assassination attempt to Togliatti, secretary of the PCI. The Communist component of the CGIL decided a general strike and the the members of the Christian component left the organization to form the “Libera CGIL”.
The contrast with the new organization was very hard. Giuseppe Fanin was a victim of this situation, attacked on 4 November 1948 night by three communist militants to "teach him a lesson", instigated by the PCI local branch young secretary who then was the first to confess the crime.

Giuseppe Fanin was the third of ten children of a couple of Venetian immigrants. Deeply Catholic, after a period in the seminary, he continued his studies to graduate in agronomy at the University of Bologna. He engaged with Catholic associations as student, then, after the degree he joined the Libera CGIL as agricultural technician. Just few months were sufficient to put him in sight for the quality of his involvement in the union.
